Freezer Pantry Challenge – Day 13

January 14, 2010 by christine
Filed under Freezer / Pantry Challenge

I forgot to mention we had ice-cream last night.  The kids were delighted!  We have a few cartons of that stored up.  I need eggs… I’m out of eggs… Maybe tomorrow we’ll run and get some.   Also, I am sooo tempted to buy some granola bars this week.  The Quaker ones are on sale for $1 a box.  A DOLLAR…   We’ll see.  I think they have pancake mix for that price too…  I shouldn’t look at the ads…

Breakfast:  Banana Smoothies – same recipe as yesterday.  Eggo Waffles and one kiddo ate the last two toaster strudels (I think… I haven’t looked super hard downstairs.)

Lunch:  Annika had a hot dog, string cheese & oranges.  Everyone else had Nacho’s.  (Just chips & cheese).  So unhealthy, I know.  We are going to work on that soon!  At least I am!  Ryan had his usual in his lunch – apple, beef jerky, carrots, mini-cupcakes, string cheese & jam sandwich.  (They get milk at school).

Dinner:  BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwiches (this was already made in the freezer).  I had some hamburger buns that needed used up, so this worked good.  Pork & Beans & Oranges.

How are things going?  We’re almost half way through the month!  Things getting extra challenging for anyone yet?

The ads! I know! They are so tempting! So I went to the store yesterday after having received a $20 rewards gift certificate from one local grocery store. It’s great and it was a surprise I didn’t know I already was at the total as I just got one last month too! I buy the baby’s formula there (we do qualify for WIC) and I get baby rewards and gas points. Love it! I was able to buy the baby’s yogurt melts which were also on sale 2/$5 and I had a $1 off coupon. Got milk at .88/half gallon so saved the free milk cpn for when it’s not on sale. Got some WW frozen treats and some peppers 3/$1. The rest was non food items. Not sure that this counts towards my total for the month as it was a free gift certificate! But avoided the temptation of the rest of the ads. Will get oranges this week though, they are on sale for .33/lb. Kids like fresh fruit way more than canned! Have to figure out a way to use the canned stock I can though. Otherwise still going strong, have a lot of stock in the pantries and freezers so not running out of anything yet! Thanks Christine!

We have some holes showing up in the upright freezer. Nice to see progress. We have eaten supper at home every night since New Years Eve (went to a church function). We have three more meals listed on the fridge before the second list of menus is used up. Then, we will make a list of what’s actually out there and start afresh on the next menu list.
Its been a nice challenge. It was something that definitely needed doing!

I folded. Thursday was a really stressful day … you know drama, drama, drama. I started off sick, had a broken car (in the pouring rain) with kids to get to school and hubby to work, a lot of emotional upset over rapidly declining health of father-in-law, and hard day at work. I know, it’s all excuses. I didn’t have the emotional strength to pull something out of the freezer/pantry for us. I picked up multiple pizzas using Pizza Hut’s $10 on any kind of pizza.

Yesterday must have been hard on everyone because the 17yo DD was asleep by 8:00. The 14yo DD fell asleep in the living room by 8:20 (and she’s still there — I’ve tried to get her to bed but she won’t budge). Hubby and I were sound asleep by 8:45. So why am I up at 1a.m.? Because I happened to wake up and want to make sure that today goes better. The car is fixed, we are all fine. Now it’s time to get back on that horse.

Thanks to the challenge, we’ll have an easier time paying the $434 repair bill. Life isn’t always smooth — I should know that by now. By setting aside a special place with a pantry go-to-meal and a freezer go-to-meal AND cluing my family in on it, I think we get through those rough patches and still stay on course.

Thanks for the challenge, Christine. I’m grateful Crystal at Money Saving Mom linked to your site.

Well, I bought lettuse and burrito wraps yesterday. The kids wanted tocos and we had everything else except the lettuse.Talked me into the burritos. MUST stay away from the store. But having DH pick up things isn’t the answer as he is a chip nut.We are doing well, will need milk and dog food over the weekend.
We has cereal and apple slices for breakfast, potato soup and PBJ’s for lunch, tocos and burritos for dinner.
Oh I payed for the lettuse and burritos with my Kroger $5 rewards coupon.Do I get extra brownie points for not spending real money? The weekend is a 3 dayer and will clean out a lot of my supplies.I am going to have to get very creative with making snack stuff.

My kids have a 4 day weekend. For some reason they gave them Tuesday off too, though I thought they were going to take it back as they are in the hole for snow days but no. So we will run through alot these next couple of days too. Made homemade pizza dough for dinner and planned another menu. Kathryn hang in there, the hard times are what make us appreciate the good ones.
