Homemade Magic Shell Topping

In our home, nothing says summer quite like a great dish of ice cream. My children LOVE to have toppings on their ice cream, and one of their very favorites is Magic Shell topping. They love to break into that crispy chocolate and dig into the smooth ice cream underneath.

Have you ever looked at the ingredients list on a bottle of Magic Shell? NOT really what I want to be feeding my children. I recently learned that you can make Magic Shell topping at home, and it only requires 2 ingredients and about 40 seconds of microwave time!  We used a mixture of semi sweet and milk chocolate chips, but feel free to experiment. I think we’ll be making a peanut butter version in the very near future, and we’ll probably experiment with white chocolate and butterscotch chips, too.

Homemade Magic Shell Topping

  • 1 C chocolate (or your favorite flavor) chips
  • 2 TBS coconut oil (measure it in its solid state).

Place chocolate chips and coconut oil in a microwave safe bowl. Heat for 30 seconds, until coconut oil is fully melted. Stir well. If the chips aren’t quite melted, heat in 10 second increments, stirring each time, until chocolate chips are almost completely melted. Remove from microwave and continue stirring until chocolate is fully melted. Drizzle over your favorite ice cream.

Store covered at room temperature. If it solidifies, uncover and heat in microwave in 10 second intervals until melted.
