Onions & Celery – Let’s Freeze!

So, I have taken up freezing onion the last couple years.  I generally use onion very sparingly, so if I buy a big ol’ onion, it would go bad before I use it all.  So if I buy one, I use it for what I need it for, and then chop up the rest and pop it in the freezer for when I need onion next.  Works great!

Well….. I was told this week that you can do the same with celery! Like to use for casseroles, soups etc.  I probably wouldn’t try eating it just plain out of the freezer… But if you’re adventurous….  (let me know how it goes K?)

So do you freeze onion or celery?  What else do you freeze?

I freeze diced onion, celery, bell peppers, shredded cheese, grapes, sliced bananas. These are all items that I have thrown away before I found out they freeze well.

  2. I freeze onions and celery all the time. I also like to freezer fruit. Sliced bananas are my favorite. They are perfect for frozen smoothies.

One of my readers on the HBHW Blog recently shared that she has a tub in her freezer and anytime she fixes vegetables she tosses the scraps in the bucket. When it’s full, she takes it out and makes vegetable stock from it.

I freeze pesto made with basil from the garden, in ice cube trays and then transferred to another bag or container. The same with pureed roasted red pepper. Shredded zucchini for adding to quiches, soups, or baking. I like to dice ham to have on hand to add to soups, quiches, pizza or even fried rice. Rice freezes alright as well.
