This recipe is a holiday tradition in my husband’s family. The recipe has been passed down from his grandmother, and is a must-have at every holiday gathering. It’s also a big hit at New Year’s parties. We make this recipe at home several times during the winter – our children love it! It’s the perfect drink to sip by the fireplace with a good book on a cold winter night!

  • 2 C sugar
  • 4 C water
  • One 2-3 inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled
  • 10 whole cloves
  • 8 whole allspice
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 3/4 C lemon juice
  • 4 C orange juice (strain out the pulp)
  • 2 qt apple cider

Boil water and sugar for 5 minutes, remove from heat. Place ginger and spices in sugar water, let cool to room temperature. Remove whole spices and refrigerate liquid until needed.

To serve, add juices and cider, heat. If serving in a punch bowl, it looks beautiful with orange slices floating in it.

Sorry about that – it’s 2 C sugar and 4 C water. There was a computer glitch yesterday when I posted the recipe, and I didn’t realize it removed part of the ingredients list.
